Chapter 10

The rest of my Sunday is quite uneventful. I sit alone and watch TV until I get tired and head to bed.

The next couple of days are slow, and quiet. No visits from Ashley, or Noel. I did tell Ashley where I’m going to be, so she has said she’ll be popping up to my parents’ house a few times to see me. She says she hopes to come by after work today to check in.

I did ask Ashley to give Noel my number if she sees him, but she says she hasn’t seen him all day. Or ever for that matter. It’s almost like she doesn’t believe he is even real. Or he’s just some creep who snuck into the office building and doesn’t actually work there, that he’s just there to stalk and murder me.

She jokes that one day maybe I’ll be on a Netflix true crime documentary, and I hung up the phone while she was describing the set up of said critically acclaimed documentary.

I am happy we’re talking again though.

Around 5:30pm I hear someone come in through the front door. Ashley strolls in and sits down next to me on the sofa.

“Hey Gracie. How are you getting on today?”

I let out a large sigh. “Ooh, great. I have done so much cleaning out of boredom that I think my skin may be permanently bleached, but you could certainly eat off of the toilet, hell you could eat out of the bowl!”

Ashley laughs and smiles at me softly. “Grace, this will be good for you.” She places her hand on mine. “Everything is too much right now; it will be good for you to be out of the office for a while.”

I ask if she has seen Noel today.

“No, my love. No Noel. No mystery man. If I see him, I will get his number and give him yours but honestly that man is as elusive as big foot.” She reaches for her phone, and I notice her wallpaper. I reach for her phone to have a closer look, and she pulls it away.

“What are you doing?” Ashley’s skin has gone pale, her eyes wide.

“Ashie, I just wanted to see your wallpaper. It looks like such a cute picture of us, can you send it to me?” I go to pull my phone out of my pocket.

Ashley stops me. “Oh, no this is a picture of me and my mum, she does a look a bit like you from a certain angle huh.” She lets out a little laugh and continues looking at her phone.

How odd. I decide to brush it off as I don’t want another argument, and we relax on the sofa for a little while before she informs me that she has ordered some Chinese food for dinner. Thankful that I don’t have to cook, I sink down fully into the sofa and wait for it to arrive.

Ashley spends much of this time on her phone and only speaks to me every so often and it mostly feels like I am talking to myself.
